New York's Ticking "Tort Time Bomb"
Want to fight crime in New York? How about fighting legal abuse first?
Lawsuits against the New York Police Department are costing the city $150 million a year, as reported by New York World on Wednesday. The article cites a “28 percent increase [in the number of lawsuits] over the previous fiscal year.”
While crime and the judicial system go hand-in-hand, our police should spend time cracking down on crime and not stuck in the courtroom drowning in lawsuits. At Sick of Lawsuits, we advocate for justice, not greed. Looking at a record increasing number of lawsuits against the NYPD, one must wonder if those are all just and brought out of fairness—not trial lawyers hoping to hit jackpot justice.
Furthermore, these lawsuits must be defended or settled by the NYPD using your tax dollars. Wouldn’t you like to have that money spent to protect the streets rather than fill someone’s pockets?
There will be a larger story here on litigation in New York and we’ll be keeping our eyes one it. Stay tuned to Project Lawsuit Abuse for the latest update on lawsuits against NYPD, and in the meantime sound off in the comments to let us know your thoughts.
