Grapes causing emotional trauma?

This morning brought us another slip and fall lawsuit, this time from Louisiana, which is a member of the Judicial Hellhole “Watch List” this year.  Mary Brown is suing Winn-Dixie grocery story for leaving grapes on the ground which caused her to slip and fall. But this isn’t just a small lawsuit…

According to the Louisiana Record, Brown is suing for a laundry list of items including “an award of damages for mental anguish, embarrassment and emotional trauma, emotional distress, pain and suffering, loss of pursuit of happiness, loss of enjoyment of life, medical expenses, physical pain and suffering, attorney's fees and court costs.”  Those must been some grapes!

Frivolous and exaggerated lawsuits such as these abuse our legal system by filling the courts, and taxpayers must foot the bill.  In 2010, a report released by Towers and Watson found that the U.S. tort system cost $248.1 billion annually.  That means each individual pays a yearly tort tax of $808. While we’re able to laugh over some ridiculous lawsuits, paying a bill that large isn’t funny.

While Brown may feel that grapes caused her “emotional trauma,” we’re fans of another grape lady who didn’t sue!
