Project Lawsuit Abuse:
Stories from the Frontlines of Lawsuit Abuse

Happy Tax Day! Now Where Does the Money Go?

Today people across the country are rushing to file their federal and state taxes. Now that we’ve filed and paid our tax bills, it’s worth considering where exactly that money is going.  More specifically, it’s worth considering how much of it is potentially being wasted in funding our broken civil justice system.

A research study by Towers Watson found that the U.S. tort system cost $248.1 billion in 2009 and estimates that every man, woman, and child pays a “lawsuit tax” of $808 per year.

Our court system is funded by taxpayers and when its abused for personal greed, we’re the ones who bear the cost. In this time of budget cuts and financial stress, we call on our elected leaders to consider how we can reduce this unnecessary burden, by taking a stand against lawsuit abuse and passing much needed legal reform.

As you send off your tax forms and, if you’re lucky, look forward to a refund check, think about how much of our tax dollars go towards our broken civil justice system.
